One of the bigger challenges in putting a ship model into FS was the shadow. If the hull went below the waterline in FS9, it still created a shadow on the water surface. The only solution I found was to physically cut the model at the waterline and hope the model didn't roll around too much and expose a gap. In FSX there's a better solution. You can apply a "No Shadow" material to the lower part of the hull and things look fine.

You can almost smell the salt air. The smoke effect file had to be customized in order to get it to appear in the proper position.

Some adjustments will have to be made before filming can begin as the frame rates dropped into single digits when the models were next to each other.
