I noticed a section in theairfile of the default FSX-A FA-18.

It's called "nozzle animation percent"

This leads me to believe programmers might be able to create new sections in the airfile, and have fsx understand how to read them.

Can anyone clue me in?

The new sections for the FA-18 are included in the jet sample at
Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register.

The explanations there are excellent.

I'm pretty sure you can not add new sections, though you can use older ones not included in the sample.
