I discovered to be not more able to make clear and trasparent enough virtual cockpit glass in FS9 and FSX.  Embarrassed

I used a glass named material with the following parameters:

Diff. Col. 157,208,239,120
Amb. Col. 192,192,192,255
Sp. Col. 189,225,234,255
Em. Col. 0,0,0,255
Spec. Pow. 150

Then I applied a dxt3 texture color 197,255,239 with an alpha channel grey 160,160,160.

This is a picture of what I see in the simulator:Multimedia File Viewing and Clickable Links are available for Registered Members only!!  You need to Login or Register

Is there somebody willing to address me in the right direction?

Massimo

Higher alpha channel numbers than 160,160,160?

I tried also an higher number than 160 for the alpha channel of the dxt3 texture , but I have not seen any appreciable difference.
I have seen models on the web that have their cockpit glass very transparent and my suspicion is that they don't have any glass at all on their canopy.

Hi,

That is usually correct, they have no glass at all.

Right, I for one, haven't put glass in my VC's since I converted to FSX. I have been using FSDSv3.51 and FSDSTweak 2.81.  I was never satisfied with the glass in the VC no matter what values of alpha, transparency, etc. I tried.  Don't know if the same applies to Gmax.

Best,  Paul

In the picture it looks like the alpha channel of the texture is used for reflection. This always produces a milky effect with transparent components.
I therefore use the material editor (FSDS) a very low alpha value, for example 30.

I use the virtual cockpit no textures for glass.
In FS9 you can no longer see the navigation lights of other aircraft.

In tweak set the transparancy with the value of the DXT5 Alpha channel. Then set the reflections (globall environment map) to use the Alpha Channel of the specular map. Use a very dark grey for the transparancy Alpha. I would also recommend converting your textures to DXT5 and also make sure that the textures in the sim are DDS format - DXT5.
Regards.

DXT5 and DDS won't work with FS2004, which his plane is pictured in.  Smiley

No, specular color (Sp. Col.) is FS2004.  A specular *map* is for FSX.
